I raised my bench max!!

Postby coachmarkos » Thu Nov 08, 2007 12:27 pm

To be honest...I never maxed out when I started lifting again about 6 weeks ago...

I'm guessing I would have done @ 135. Maybe. I'm not sure. I'm positive I could have done 125. Putting 45 lb plates on would have scared me though.

Today, I did 165. It was hard, but I did it.

Couldn't quite pull off 170.

So, this changes my workouts, because I had been doing 3 sets of 10 at 95 lbs.

Now, according to the chart in the weight room...I should do three sets of 10 at 65%, which is 105.

Also, I think I"m going to vary it up, and do some higher weights with lower reps.... I'm just getting bored of doing 3 sets of 10 every day.

how many times a week do you do this then?

two or three.

You should really have a rest day in there...so I usually do it twice a week.

However, I do have weeks, where I cheat and go two days in a row upper body.

Right now, I've moved to 5 sets of 6 reps. Start at 65%, then 70%, then 75%, 80%, and 82 %.

Coach: i've found that heavier weights - 6 reps 3x Mon and Fri and lighter weights higher reps on Wed. is a good 3 day rotation for building strength and maintaining it. I'd be leery of charts too - use them only as guide, not as the gospel. Do what you feel - some days you're gonna have the strength and adrenaline to really do well and some days you just ain't gonna have it. Vary your weights and workouts to take advantage of the "strong" days and get thru your off days w/o hurting yourself even if it means dropping weight or reps.

yeah, I've been "experimenting" the past few weeks.

It's been fun.
